Every other year, a group of parents and teachers organizes a barn dance that is open to all elementary students. This January event is held in the community gym and offers food, music, and fun-filled activities, encouraging the involvement of parents and siblings. The Petersburg IYF committee led an activity where the students decorated plain bandanas using fabric pens, forest and wildlife-themed stamps, and an IYF stamp. Approximately 120 kids participated, producing creative and unique bandanas to take home. After they were finished, a card was attached to each that listed statistics about forests around the world and offered information about International Year of Forests and the IYF website.
The Petersburg IYF committee includes Carin Christensen, Cindy McDonell, Kelly O’Soup, and Linda Slaght of the Petersburg Ranger District, and Karen Dillman and Sheri Nicholson of the Petersburg Supervisor’s Office.
