The United Nations General Assembly designated 2011 International Year of Forests (IYF). IYF was a global platform to celebrate and highlight actions being taken by individuals, communities, government agencies, and private groups to sustainably manage and conserve the world’s forests.
To celebrate, Alaska’s national forests–the Chugach and Tongass–launched a year-long campaign to bring attention to the critical resources, innovative programs, and celebrations that allow individuals to explore their backyard, celebrate their heritage, and find their inspiration day in and day out. The Chugach and Tongass also released a collectible poster series, which was designed by Solstice Advertising and won awards from the Alaska chapters of both the American Institute of Graphic Arts and the Public Relations Society of America.

Sitkans, familiar with the areas of standing dead cedar trees along Peril Strait and other locations within the Sitka Community Use Area, will be able to gain a more thorough understanding of the dynamics of these ecological changes and how it fits into historic and present climate change. As Paul describes, yellow cedar can be thought of as a canary in the coalmine and gives us opportunities to understand, monitor, and respond to climate change in forests around Sitka. This presentation is part of the Sitka Conservation Society's Backwoods and Waters Series as well as part of the United Nation's 2011 International Year of the Forest.

To better integrate current knowledge and plan future research efforts, the Copper River Delta Science Symposium will focus on the delta as a system, covering topics from hydrology and geomorphology to avian nesting ecology and trophic relationships. This conference will provide an opportunity for inter-disciplinary examination of the delta and to identify future research needs to help manage and conserve this ecologically significant area in the face of climate change and other environmental transformations.

He will also discuss how the timing of plant phases, such as budding and flowering, over time can be used to investigate environmental signals such as climate change. Dr. Alaback is founder of Project BudBurst, a program dedicated to encouraging citizen scientists and students of all ages to observe of our natural world, collect information, and participate in scientific research and discovery. On Saturday, May 7th, there will be a live songbird-banding demonstration at the Juneau Community Garden pavilion. U.S. Forest Service wildlife technicians will give attendees an up-close look at local species. Birds will be captured in nets, fitting with light-weight tags and safely released. Netting will be ongoing between 7:30am and 11:00am. On Sunday, May 8th, we will be welcoming back the Arctic terns at Photo Point Trail near Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center. Zoomed-in views through high-powered spotting scopes, art, prizes, and activities for learners of all ages are planned. Please join us between 1:00pm and 4:00pm.
